Tonawanda 2008

Hard Left Racing made its way to Tonawanda NY  this past weekend, for what they had hoped would be there first weekend of racing for the 2008 season.

Unfortunately after working feverishly over the last couple of months, this was not to be.

Mother Nature did not wish to comply and unfortunately the weekend was completely blown out. Although this was disappointing to all the racers on hand, we here at Hard Left Racing want to acknowledge all the hard work that John Krebs and his entire organization put into this event. Without all of there hard work and commitment to the sport "Thunder on the Niagara " would not even take place.

They put on a very professional event and go to extreme lengths to make us the race teams feel at home.

We would like thank "Thunder on the Niagara " for there hospitality while we where there and hope for nothing but the best for them and the event for years to come. Also we would like to thank the "Seco" company for coming on board as a weekend sponsor for the team and wish them all the best.

Thanks again and we will be back at your event next year!

February 2008
Get the boat ready

Well the 2007 season is distant memory and we are now concentrating on the 2008 season.

Before we get to the new season I figured I could fill in any questions that some of you fans may have had and fill you all in what transpired over the past season.

At the beginning of the 2007 year the “Hard Left Racing Team” made some much needed repairs to the hull. We decided to change the bottom of the hull from the cockpit all the way back to the transom as we were having problems the season before with water infiltration and cracks. We finished the work just in time for the Valleyfield regatta (exactly1 day before) and headed off to our first race of the season.

Things went surprisingly well for us and we came away with a 3rd place finish in Friday’s final and another 3rd place in Sunday’s final behind winner Eric Langevin CS-12 “Long Shot” and Runner up Mark Johnson in S-9 “Honey Bun”. It was a pretty good start to the season.
Two weeks later we headed off to St-Felicien Quebec and the weekend started off well capturing first place in our qualifier. Unfortunately in Saturdays final I did not make a perfect start and was actually as low as 6th at the end of one lap but was fortunate to have a fast boat and came back to finish 3rd behind winner Mike Monahan CS-1 “Orange Rush” and 2nd place Tom Diabo CS-20 “Sonic Wave”.

Sunday qualifying went well finishing first in my qualifier and even setting the fastest time in doing so ahead of Mike Monahan. I must say, this was a first!!!
Heading into the final we had high expectations that we could do well.
At the start of the final, I took a perfect start in lane 4 and had the lead going into turn one.
At the exit we were in a dead heat with Mike Monahan in lane 2 which continued for the rest of the final. We exchanged the lead several times and Mike eventually won the race just over 3 or 4 boat lengths ahead.
Unfortunately, after having had a great race with Mike I received notification the I had received 1 minute penalty for changing lanes exiting turn 1.Thus finishing in a disappointing 7th in the final. Darn turn judges!!!
Next up was Venise-en- Quebec.Venise is a beautiful little town on the Canadian, US border and has some of the roughest water I have ever raced in. The whole weekend was a write off for Hard Left Racing as we had problem after problem while competing.

At the end of the weekend we left Venice with a 4th place finish and a lot of work to be done for the last race of the year.

Last up for us was, Long Sault, Ontario “Long Sault Hydroplane Regatta”.

Saturday’s qualifying was a new experience for me as I blew the minute pin on the back stretch and had to cut the field and come back around the entire course. Thus we started and finished last (haven’t finished in last in years!!). It was a race to forget.
Saturday’s final went much better and I ended up in 2nd place behind Eric Langevin CS-12.

Sunday morning came and things did not look promising with bleak weather and a lot of wind. Fortunately for us things got a little better and racing got under way.
Qualifying for Hard Left Racing went well and we qualified with the fastest time.
Entering the final we felt we had a good shot at it and things went well until a certain driver decided to blow the start and got into the way heading into turn one.
At the end it was Hard Left Racing once again in 2nd place. “I am starting to feel like Matt Kenseth of hydroplane racing as the perpetual 2nd place finisher…..”

Well that is how the shortest season in Hard Left Racing history finished up. Even if we only made it out for four weekends of racing it was not a bad year and we proved that we can be one of the quickest teams out there.

Check back soon for more news and info about the up and coming season.

See you in the first turn!!!

Derek Anderson
