| In
2008 Derek will be entering his 13th racing season. Since starting his
career this veteran racer has been highly involved with the Canadian
Boating Federation as the class Rep for 2.5 Litre from 1999 until 2007. He
steps away from this position in order to focus more on the aspects of his
other position as VP Racing for the CBF that he has held for the past 4
years. He would also like to have more time at the events to tend to his
equipment. “It’s not always easy dealing with some of the matters that
may come up at a site and still have time to prep the boat for
racing”
Also, this
coming summer it will free up some of his time so can help his wife with
the arrival of their first baby which is due at the beginning of May.
Also in 2008
Derek hopes to be able to travel to a few more venues than in 2007.
“Hopefully I am
allowed out of the House, seriously though we are committed to having fun
this year and competing every weekend.”

In
the past Derek’s mom has always helped out in anyway possible.
“When I bought my first hull at 18 years old, it was my mom that
helped buy some of the equipment” to quote Derek.
She has
always followed the team to as many races as possible and is a very
hands on person, washing the boat down, helping to put it in the
water, watching Max and etc….
Unfortunately
this past fall she went through a terrible illness that almost took
her. Miraculously after almost 3 month in hospital she has made a
great recovery and is improving every day since returning home.
“She will
be back at her regular routine this coming season.
Who knew
“moms” were that strong…….unbelievable!!!” |
 |
The
senior member of the team is always on hand at the races. Having
been with the team since the beginning in 1996 Jerry has a lot
of experience trouble shooting any problems that may arise from time
to time. He is always there when you need him and has a wit that
keeps all of the team on there toes. After the races you can always
have a good laugh at one of his stories from the past.
Mechanically
inclined he always finds a way to make something that shouldn’t
work, work! |

Crew
member on weekends and Derek’s wife during the week.
Rachel covers all
the aspects of prepping all the behind the scene necessities food, cloth,
coolers and so forth “if it wasn’t for her I would be packing peanut
butter and cooler full of …will say bottled refreshments” to quote
Derek.
She is big help at
the races keeping everything organized, she also helps out with the hydro
by holding it on the shoreline before and after the heats, cleaning,
washing the hull and helping in any way she can |

Jeremy
is one of my cousins that is a diehard hydro fan. He started coming to the
races in
Valleyfield
as kid growing up and became involved with the team at the end of the 2006
race season. In 2007, he got his hands dirty for the first time by helping
out with the disassembly and rebuild of the hull before the beginning of
the season. He continued on during the race season, as he accompanied us
to every race we attended and was a big help to us over the summer. He is
a “Gear Head” by nature and enjoys mechanics so much so, that he is in
school taking an auto mechanics class to become a certified “Gear
Head”.
He is also
working at an automotive paint manufacture proving that he is a hand on
guy in the world of cool toys!! Give him a couple of years and I might be
able to sit back and watch him do ALL of the work!! |
|

|
He just
barks,
sleeps and makes us walk. |
